Ringtones

A ringtone or ring tone is the terminology used to describe the sound that a mobile makes when there is either an incoming call or when you are receiving a text message. There are multiple types of ringtones; they are Monophonic (mono), Polyphonic (poly), and Realtones (real). The type of ringtone you can have is dependent on the quality of the handset you own. Monophonic ringtones were the original type of ringtones used when mobile phones first came on to the scene. A monophonic ring tone is simply a series of notes, one musical note at a time. With the huge variety of mobile phones that are now on the market, it is very rare to hear monophonic ringtones. Most phones come with higher capabilities in terms of ringtones, and even the standard default ringtones on a handset are usually polyphonic. Polyphonic ringtones were the next step up from monophonic ringtones. This means that a polyphonic ring tone can consist of multiple notes at a time, as opposed to one at a time like with Mono's. Polyphonic ring tones typically come in the MIDI format. And then the next step up from Poly's are Realtones, with are also known as Truetones and usually come in the mp3 format. These are the most common and most popular variety of ringtones, as they are the type most widely supported by new handsets. A huge range of mobiles, from Nokia's, to Motorola, to Samsung, LG, or Sony Ericsson come equipped with Realtone capabilities. They have become quite the fashion statement, with mobile users opting for ringtones that will adequately reflect their personality and their taste in music. These types of ringtones need to be downloaded using your mobiles internet service, hence leading to the success of the mobile music industry. Singers, such as rapper Chamillionaire, have taken advantage of this functionality, with his hit 'Ridin' being a ringtone that has gone platinum three times over! Some mobile phones even come with built in melody makers, which allow you to create your own ringtones. These, however, are only polyphonic. You can mix a range of instrumental sounds and beats together to create a melody.
